A big THANK YOU to Pat Disney (chair) and the members of the Winetasting Committee for planning and organizing a fantastic event.  Everyone at the event I spoke to was very complimentary. It was a wonderful evening thanks to the committee and all of the members of our club who volunteered at the event.

I want to thank everyone for their enthusiastic approval of my President’s Project this year.  I believe our partnership with Lake Tahoe Community College and the Lake Tahoe Unified School District in the Gift of Literacy project offers us a wonderful opportunity to serve the children in our community.  If you are not familiar with this project, I will give you a brief description.  The Gift of Literacy program will host the second annual event including 260 first-grade students on April 26, 2019, at Lake Tahoe Community College.  The program will include students from all of the elementary schools in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District, Zephyr Cove Elementary, South Lake Tahoe Public Library and the LTCC Library and programs.  Hosting the event on the LTCC campus will connect reading with college for the student and help put them on a pathway to lifelong learning.  It will also likely be the first introduction to college for most student and may help them envision attending as adults.  Eight books will be selected and will include books with subjects such as environmental/non-fiction, award winning books, importance of reading, multicultural/bilingual and character books. A set of the selected books will be provided to each participating classroom, as well as to school and community libraries.  Teachers will incorporate the books into the school day and the students will select their individual favorites which they will receive during the celebration on April 26. Our club will:

  • Collect donations for “goody bags” from local business
  • Produce and adhere labels to individualize books for students
  • Prepare a personalized “goody bag” for each student
  • Transport student bags and books to LTCC prior to the event
  • Distribute books, lead groups, help supplement guest readers and support mascot effort and/or provide mascot handler support on the day of the event
  • Provide $7,150 to purchase books, backpacks, labels for books and backpacks, and for author expenses

Actions Taken at the November Board & Business Meetings

The Board recommended and the Club approved supporting the Gift of Literacy project as described for the full amount of $7,150 to include $1,000 from the President’s Project allocation, two anonymous donations of $1,000 each, with the remainder of $4,150 coming from the 2018-2019 Allocations budget.

The Club approved the donation of five Thanksgiving turkey dinners at $50 each for a total of $250 to Live Violence Free from the Contingency Fund.
